Floral Ramadan Hoop

Here it is, my first ever DIY project for this blog! A multipurpose wall or table décor in readiness for the blessed month to come. The month of Ramadan is when The Glorious Quran was revealed to the Prophet PBUH in year 609 and it was instructed for Muslims to abstain from basic human desires such as hunger and thirst, whilst aiming to become closer to the Creator by increasing good deeds. Ramadan is a month of sacrifice as well as a period of reflection and spiritual growth and we mark the ending of this blessed month with Eid-Ul-Fitr.

Eid held a lot of significance for me while I was growing up as it was a day of celebration with family, food and pretty outfits. But as I got older and became closer to my faith, I realised that the month leading up to Eid is equally as important as the celebration and I try my best to create excitement in my household with daily reminders and modern Islamic décor. This is what inspired me to create this Ramadan Mubarak sign.

While I have specifically created this floral hoop for Ramadan, there are no restrictions as to what this hoop can be used for. It’s also perfect for birthdays, baby showers and children's birthdays. You can add your own flare by changing up the colour palette and also by using different materials. I initially wanted ready-made wooden letters for the wording but there were none available when I went shopping so I used glitter cardboard instead. I cut out letters which I drew without stencils – Hence some wonky letters! But I believe that all DIY items should have a personal touch and the funky wording was mine.

My mantra towards decor is 'less is more' therefore I steered away from covering the entire hoop with flowers. I was initially planning to cover one side of the hoop but couldn’t resist adding finishing touches on the opposite side as well. If flowers aren’t your thing, you can opt for vine leaves to add some greenery. I went with a burlap roll for the background which usually only comes in rustic colours but I happened to find a white one which was perfect for the gold writing.

I can’t stress how useful florist wire was in creating this hoop. It is a bit pricier compared to normal string but it bends in every direction you can think of. I also recommend using flowers with thin wire stems which can also bend easily. My flowers seamlessly twisted around the hoop and didn’t need any further securing. Another important thing on the shopping list is glue. Whether you’re going to use cardboard, wooden letters or fabric for the wording, you’re going to need some pretty solid glue to hold it all together. I went with all-purpose Tacky Craft Glue which is perfect for crafts, hobbies and household use.

While the floral hoop is gorgeous on its own, I wanted to add that extra bit of sparkle and threaded battery-operated bud lights around the hoop. It lifted the entire look and battery operated lights meant that I wasn't limited to placing the hoop near a power socket. It might get tricky securing the battery pocket to the wall but you can use florist wire for support. I can’t decide where I want to place this beautiful hoop in my home. It may take turns in my living room, hall-way table and Ramadan table for when we host Iftar. So much to look forward to in the month to come!

Difficulty:★☆
Cost: $50
Time to make: less than 1 hour

Items:

Wooden hoop 40cm
One bunch of artificial peonies
One bunch of artificial roses
One sheet glitter cardboard
Extra newspaper to work on
Decorative Lights (optional)
Burlap roll
Craft glue
Florist Wire
Craft Scissors
30cm Ruler
Pencil
Eraser

Method:

Start off by measuring the burlap roll against the hoop diameter and cut roll with a little overhang on each side.

Flip the hoop over and fold the overhang burlap back over the edge of the hoop.  Cut a piece of florist wire and thread it through the holes, winding it securely against the hoop. Repeat this step twice (resulting in 3 wires per side). Repeat on the other side and trim excess overhang material.

Flip the hoop back over to the front and plan where you will place your flowers. Once you’re happy with the positioning, wrap the wire stem of the flower around the hoop until secure. Repeat with remaining flowers and secure using florist wire if more support is needed. Set hoop aside.

Consider how large to make your letters, in relation to the thickness of the burlap roll. Start drawing your letters on the back of the glittered cardboard, you can use a stencil for this step if required. Most letters drawn on the back of cardboard will be mirrored when cut so you may prefer to draw on the glitter surface with a pencil and remove lines with eraser after cutting.

Place the hoop on a newspaper and start to glue each letter to the burlap runner. Press down on the letter and let it dry for a few minutes. Repeat with remaining letters.

If you are using decorative lights, start to thread the light around the hoop until the entire hoop is covered with lights.

Place your newly created floral hoop on the wall or on any surface you would like to decorate and give yourself a pat on the back. Well done!
