Singapore & Malaysia Travel Food Diary

Indulging in local delicacies is definitely the most exciting part about any travel and we surely ate to our hearts content on our recent holiday in Singapore and Malaysia. I have shared my top picks on Kisha’s Kitchen Instagram channel but I did want to elaborate more on the details of each meal and how we stumbled upon the dishes. If you’re planning to visit or just keen to know more about the food culture in Singapore and Malaysia, then keep on reading!

Our first stop was at Singapore and we chose to stay at Swissotel the Stamford. We experienced impeccable service from the get go and was presented with the option to have in room dining for breakfast as it catered for our halal needs. We jumped at this idea and ordered in room breakfast for the next four days that we were there. Pictured below is the South Indian Thali breakfast that I ordered on day 1 which consisted of Paratha, Idli, Vada, Sambar, Coconut Chutney, Tomato Chutney and Dhal. I am a sucker for traditional Indian cuisine and was blown away by this breakfast platter. I had tasted everything on the plate before but the spices were so different in Singapore that I fell in love with the dish all over again.

If you’ve been to Singapore, you’ll know that there isn’t a shortage of activities to keep you entertained as a tourist. All of our days were jam packed with things that we both wanted to do so we only had a little bit of time to chug down a meal before we visited Sentosa Island. Right next to the Art Science Museum we found the Marina Bay Sands Mall and an eatery called Pondok. It was the only halal option in the entire food court so we settled for it and found the best honey chicken we had ever tasted. Definitely do not give this place a miss if you’re looking for a cheap lunch on the go!

We jumped on a plane after four days in Singapore and landed in the vibrant, busy and authentic city of Kuala Lumpur. KL was a lot different to what I had pictured but loved discovering something new. Pictured below is a meal we had for dinner at an eatery called Di Naina for approximately $12.00 AUD. We went crazy and ordered a bunch of different things but the stand out was the beef dish. It tasted like a perfect melody of curry and soy base but to this day we can’t pin point how it was made! We didn’t mind guessing and went back twice in the four days we were there. So Di Naina should definitely be on the top of your list if you always fancy a curry and some spice!

One thing that I dreamt about prior to visiting KL was dining under the moon and stars in a night food market. There’s something about food markets that excite me and given it was filled with Malaysian cuisine, I was twice as happy. The servings at food markets are small and cheap so I recommend buying a few things to act as your main. After we inhaled satay chicken skewers, chow mein and a bbq lamb dish, we stumbled upon a hot dog truck. Pictured below is an American Hot Dog that we couldn’t resist at Tapak Urban Street Dining in Jalan Ampang.

We saved the best for last, literally! If you are a foodie, visiting Hawker Food Heaven AKA Jalan Alor will be high on your food bucket list. Jalan Alor occupies a long street, filled with enough outdoor restaurants to leave you mind boggled. And if the options weren't enough to leave you confused, you'll also be approached by people who will try to drag you into their restaurant! We walked up and down almost 10 times until we decided to settle with a halal eatery for dinner. I played it safe and went for Beef Mee Goreng and left a happy girl. You can never have enough noodles, right?

On our quest up and down Jalan Alor we also discovered the best dessert that we’ve ever had: Coconut ice-cream served with shaved coconut inside a real coconut shell! If you are coconut crazy like me, you’ll wish that you could bring some back home too. I’m currently trying my best to recreate this delicious dessert.
